Unit Reflection
I think that my unit on skeletal system has many strengths. The information is laid out in a way that is easy to access and use. It integrates literacy throughout with books, writing, and other reading materials. The reading pieces are fun but also informational and different for the students. I feel that such pieces are very important to have when teaching a longer unit so that the students do not feel as though they are learning nothing new. The activities included within the unit are great for all types of learners and provide many different experiences to learn this information. A weakness would be trying to find all the materials needed for the activities. Not all schools will have what is needed for some of the lessons and the teacher many need to come up with a way to modify the lessons. Another weakness would be the fact of time. Some of these lessons would take more time than what is offered in the everyday classroom for one subject.
The plans for individual differences are well organized throughout my unit. There are many activities where lower-level students will be able to work with partners. This will allow students another perspective on the topic of the lesson. For higher-level learners, the teacher can change the questions into more challenging questions that use higher-level thinking. The KWL charts will be a wonderful way for the teacher to see where each individual student stands with the information. They will be able to see what needs to be done to help or further the student’s learning. For English Language Learners, the activities can be translated into their native languages. Some of the websites used do have the Spanish translation of the material. This will make them feel more comfortable about the content they will be learning. The visual and kinesthetic learners will have what they need with all of the information being displayed on a website or active board and hands-on activities. The auditory learner will receive the information they need from the readings aloud and conversations that will take place during the unit.
I believe that overall, this unit is a great way to teach students the importance of the skeletal system.
